Middle East events’ industry pays tribute to Walsh
dmg chief receives lifetime achievement award for outstanding contribution to regional events industry at Event 360 showcase
Bernard Walsh, Managing Director of dmg world media Dubai, was honoured by regional industry professionals at the inaugural Middle East Event Awards during the Event 360 exhibition on Sunday 27 April 2008.
Walsh, considered by fellow professionals as one of the pioneers of Dubai’s exhibition industry, has grown dmg world media Dubai into a major player, with considerable regional and international reach. During a highly successful Middle East career spanning more than 20 years, Walsh has successfully developed an enviable portfolio of events, such as INDEX, Big 5 and The Hotel Show.
Receiving the award from Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General, Dubai World Trade Centre, Walsh lauded the professionalism within the industry. ”The event industry has grown remarkably over the past 15 years and has attracted many talented people. Looking around here today, it is reassuring to know that not only does the industry have an exciting future I am confident it is in safe hands.”
Another recipient of a top award was Jackie Wartanian, Managing Director of Centre Stage Management (CSM). The UAE-based company was praised for its ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Middle East’s Events Industry’. The award was further recognition of CSM’s exemplary event promotion and management skills, having earlier organised Desert Rock, one of the biggest annual music festivals staged in the Middle East.
Other award winners were honoured for cultural and sporting events, event products, services and support including production, lighting, sound, theme and logistics. A judging panel made up of internationally recognised figures from a variety of industry sectors and disciplines were responsible for choosing the winners.
Presented by leading meeting and events industry publication meetme (Meet Middle East) magazine and hosted by Event 360, the awards programme was open to companies who plan, manage, supply or service exhibitions; consumer, corporate and public events; weddings, parties, concerts, venues and theatres.
“Although regional event organisers benchmark themselves internationally, the awards provide a platform to showcase innovation and demonstrate regional excellence. Through recognition we hope to provide inspiration and encouragement for the future development of this vibrant industry,” said Neil Hickman, Group Exhibition Director, PALME Middle East.
With special emphasis upon the tourism, leisure, real estate and entertainment industries, the regional events sector has witnessed extraordinary growth, culminating in overwhelming demand for professional audio, lighting, audio visual and systems integration products and services.
In response PALME organiser IIR Exhibitions re-branded Event 360 into a dedicated vertical show under the umbrella of PALME Middle East which finishes today (Tuesday 29 April) at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre.
