Next week's Middle East peace summit has forced US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to cancel plans to attend a Group of Eight foreign ministers meeting in Japan, the State Department said Wednesday.
"She will not be able to go to the G8 ministerial," spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters, noting what is expected to Albright's deep involvement in the Israel-Palestinian talks to begin Tuesday in Camp David, Maryland.
In her place, Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott will represent the United States at the G8 foreign ministers meeting in Miyazaki, Boucher said in a statement late Wednesday.
"The secretary had been greatly looking forward to the Miyazaki program prepared under Japan's leadership and regrets that she is unable to travel to Japan at this time," Boucher said - WASHINGTON (AFP)
