At least two civilians have been killed and dozens of others injured in two separate mortar attacks by militants against residential areas in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo as well as the southwestern city of Sweida.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said one civilian was killed and 20 others sustained injuries when a number of mortar shells landed on Tuesday in the Ashrafieh neighborhood of Aleppo, located 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of the capital, Damascus, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

The projectiles also caused damage to several houses and buildings at the residential area.

Separately, mortar rounds fired by militants struck Sweida, situated some 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Damascus, killing one civilian and wounding several others.

Cities and towns across Syria have frequently come under bomb attacks as well as mortar and rocket fire by militants since crisis erupted in the country more than four years ago.

Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
