Three illegal Iranian immigrants were killed when they stepped into a mine field near the Evros border crossing between Greece and Turkey, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA) on Monday.

A Greek official was quoted as saying that the three were killed when four illegal Iranian immigrants tried to enter Greece from Turkey. The fourth Iranian, aged 24, was injured and was hospitalized in the northern Greek city of Alexandropoulis, said IRNA.

The injured man said his group had been smuggled into Greece by an unidentified taxi driver who dropped them near the border and asked them to proceed on foot.

He said they could hardly see anything in the dark and stepped on two land mines, which killed his three other companions.

Dozens of illegal immigrants have been killed by land mines at the Evros border between Greece and Turkey in the last few years, said the agency – Albawaba.com
