More Mosques in Egypt Placed under State Control

Egypt's Awqaf Minister Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq ordered Wenesday that one thousand more private mosques in 22 governorates of Egypt be brought under the control of his ministry, press reports said. 

Cairo daily `Al-Ahram' reported that 27 thousand private mosques and nine thousand zawiyas (small mosques) in Egypt have been taken over by the ministry since 1996.  

The paper quoted the minister as saying that the rest of the private mosques will be taken over by his Ministry in order to "protect the words that are spoken on the minbar [pulpit]" – Albawaba.com
