More than one ton of drugs was seized by authorities in the UAE last year, reported the Gulf News.
The confiscated items comprised 943.405 kilos of hashish, 82.176 kilos of heroin, 27.236 kilos of opium and 23,000 tablets of a variety of drugs.
Col. Sheikh Talib bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the figures were alarming and indicated the threat that drugs pose to this country.
"If such quantities of drugs have been seized, then what was the quantity that was actually smuggled into the country in that period?" he asked.
Tougher laws are one weapon against drug dealers, he said.
In addition, the demand for drugs could be reduced by increasing public awareness of the dangers of addiction and by emphasizing religious principles among youngsters.
The UAE has been strengthening its relationships with neighboring countries and exchanging information about drug gangs.
