Container handling volume at Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the Kingdom’s sole Terminal, has registered the highest ever throughput in the month of November with a total throughput of 54,848 TEU.
Comparing the figure registered in November 2008 with the number registered for the same period 2007 a 40.6% increase is recorded where the total throughput achieved in November 2007 was 39,021 TEU. Furthermore, volumes handled Year to Date November 2008 accumulates to 528,197 TEU compared with 379,292 TEU for the same period last year, thus registering a 39.3% increase.
According to Mr. Klaus Holm Laursen, ACT CEO, “This result is a continuation to the series of outstanding handling volume numbers registered at the Terminal during this year. The significant increase registered year on year is a direct result of our relentless efforts to boost ACT’s capabilities through improved infrastructure and facilities as well as our continuous strive to deliver the best quality services to our customers.”
Statistics issued by ACT show that the throughput of 54,848 split between imported cargo of 27,857 TEU, while exported containers registered 26,991 TEU. Looking at the volume of imported cargo recorded for the same period last year, statistics also reveal a 43.6% increase, where it registered 19,404 TEU, while exported containers witnessed a 37.5% increase from the same period in 2007 registering 19,617 TEU.
In reviewing the end of year forecasts, ACT CEO pointed out that the company expects further growth in the total number of container handling. “It is within our future plans to continuously improve the services and capacity of the Terminal, thus enabling us to absorb the increase in demand on the Kingdom’s container terminal in support of the Jordanian economy,” added Laursen.
