Moroccan King: Each Nation has Right to its Own Kind of Democracy

Developing nations have the right to their own kind of democracy, introduced at their own pace, and should not be dictated to by the West, Morocco's King Mohammed VI said Friday. 

"All civilizations, all people, have the right to install a democracy conforming to their own rhythm, their history and their degree of economic and social development," the king said in an address to an international conference on democracy at Assilah in the north of the country. 

He declared himself opposed to the West's democratic "export system" of attempting to foist its own brand of democracy on southern nations. 

The Moroccan king nonetheless exhorted the western-style democracies to help their southern counterparts with financial and technical aid, particularly in the area of debt relief - RABAT (AFP)
