Morocco’s King Mohammed VI arrived in Nouakchott Monday for an official visit to Mauritania, the first by a Moroccan monarch to the country, reported the official Maghrebe Arab Presse (MAP).

The king will hold talks on bilateral and regional issues with President Mouaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya.

Morocco and Mauritania are bound by several cooperation accords. Morocco’s phone operator, Maroc Telecom, purchased earlier this year 51 percent of shares in Mauritania’s Maurtel for $ 84 million.

Another accord provides for the construction by Morocco of a 470-km road between Nouakchott (the capital city) and Nouadhibou (the economic and financial capital).

The road will cost $ 70 million. Morocco’s exports to Mauritania were worth $ 47.56 million in 2000 against $ 11.47 million in 1999, said the agency – Albawaba.com
