Seventy Iranian university professors were arrested as part of the government crackdown on protesters, according to a Web site affiliated with Iran's reformist presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi.
The professors were detained on Wednesday, immediately after meeting with Mousavi, said the site. It added it is not clear where the detainees were taken.
According to the AP, the professors arrested Wednesday were believed to be among a group that has been pushing for a more liberal form of government.
During the post election protests, at least 17 people have been killed. The state-owned newspaper, Iran, said Thursday that in addition to the 17, seven members of the pro-government Basij militia died in the clashes, and dozens more injured by weapons and knives.
In clashes on Wednesday near the Iranian parliament, thousands of police crushed hundreds of Mousavi followers, using tear gas and clubs.
