Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak telephoned Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Tuesday to discuss the "latest developments in the Palestinian territories," the MENA news agency reported.

They also discussed "the contacts underway on the Arab and international levels" with regards to the Middle East, said MENA, according to AFP.

Mubarak's call came as the US State Department's top Middle East diplomat, William Burns, is scheduled to begin his trip to the region in Egypt on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, US Congressman Darrell Issa, who met Mubarak in Cairo on Tuesday, said an international conference for peace in the Middle East could be held as early as July. (Albawaba.com)
