Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called Thursday for an emergency Arab summit before the end of this month to discuss "the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories, Information Minister Safwat el-Sherif said in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Mubarak’s call came shortly after the conclusion of talks with the US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, which dealt with the bloody confrontations in the Palestinian lands.

He quoted Mubarak as saying that "Arab foreign ministers must meet as soon as possible to prepare for an urgent Arab summit, before the end of October, to face up to the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories and discuss the future of the peace process."

A meeting of Arab foreign ministers is already scheduled for October 21-22, but Mubarak was understood to be calling for it to be brought forward, reported AFP – (Several Sources)
