Leading Muslim Brotherhood figure and former MP Farid Ismail passed away after suffering from a stroke, the Freedom and Justice Party announced on Wednesday.

In a short statement on the Freedom and Justice Party's official Facebook page, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood announced that the former parliamentarian died on Wednesday after suffering from a stroke last week.

The Freedom and Justice Party accused prison authorities of neglect as they did not transfer him to hospital immediately, which led to the rapid deterioration of his health, it said.

Born in 1957, the former parliamentarian was transferred to the Al-Akrab prison hospital a couple of days ago.

Farid Ismail was arrested in September 2013. He was sentenced to seven years in jail in July 2014 for inciting violence in Sharkia governorate following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

The Muslim Brotherhood was designated as a terrorist organisation by the Egyptian government in November 2013.

The Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, was also dissolved by a court ruling in Egypt in August 2014.
