ALBAWABA - A unexplained explosion that damaged a big oil tanker cruising off the coast of Oman has revived attention on shipping security in one of the world’s most strategically critical maritime routes.

Maritime authorities said the attack occurred about 60 nautical miles off Muscat as the tanker was transiting waters off the Gulf of Oman. There were no injuries among the crew and the vessel remained functioning despite the explosion.

The tanker, known as the Olympic Life, was apparently sailing without cargo at the time. Initial investigations suggest that the blast affected a portion of the vessel’s fuel tank, causing a small amount of fuel to leak into the surrounding waters.

The operator of the vessel reported the ship appeared to have struck an unidentified object just before the explosion. Emergency procedures were launched promptly and the oil spill was later brought under control.

Maritime tracking data indicated the tanker had continued its cruise following the incident, indicating that the damage did not jeopardize the ship’s stability or navigation capabilities.

Officials have not said what triggered the explosion or whether the damage was done by an accident or an object that was underwater or any other outside influence. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the blast and the impact on the environment.

The incident comes amid rising regional tensions and surveillance of marine routes linking the Gulf with global energy markets. “The area’s key role in global oil transport means any disturbance can quickly attract international notice,” security specialists say.

The crew escaped uninjured and the vessel remained afloat, but the mysterious nature of the explosion is likely to raise new questions about the safety of commercial shipping in the waters around the Gulf of Oman and other nearby critical sea lanes.
