Nearly 13,000 Syrians have been killed after being tortured by the regime, a monitor told AFP on Friday.
Since the uprising began in 2011, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it's counted 12,751 people who have died in President Bashar al-Assad's detention centers after torture. Those numbers don't include the 20,000-plus residents who are currently missing.
"Some of the families of those killed under torture were forced to sign statements that their loved ones had been killed by rebel groups," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
An exhibit at the UN headquarters show the extent to which the regime has harmed its civilians, with photos of the violence civilians have experienced. About 200,000 Syrians in the conflict have been killed total.
