A video captured on a man’s cell phone has because and instant Internet icon of the Iranian election protests. The video clip shows the brutal killing of a 16-year-old girl philosophy student named Neda Agha Soltani. Sources say the teen was standing next to her father on the side of the road watching fellow protestors during a rally when an Iranian Basij fighter shot her with a sniper rifle from a nearby rooftop. She was dead within minutes.
The video clip has spread like wildfire overnight, sparking large responses worldwide on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. It has also further exposed the brutality of Iranian security forces against the protestors that have tried to keep their rallies peaceful.
In Farsi, the name “Neda” translates to “the call” or “the voice”; internet users have started to call Soltani, “the angel of Iran.”
