US President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House Monday evening amid continued efforts by the U.S. to reach a compromise between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived in Washington on Sunday to address the 2009 General Assembly of the Jewish Federation of North America. Later on Sunday the White House announced the meeting.

Netanyahu’s aids told reporters that the two leaders would discuss the peace process and issues concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The settlements issue is anticipated  to arise as well. Obama has been unable to convince Netanyahu to call for a permanent freeze of settlement construction.

The talks come as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has announced that he would not seek reelection in the next Palestinian presidential election.
