An American soldier was killed Monday in Baghdad area, an Arabic TV channel reported. Quoting an eyewitness, Al-Jazeera TV channel reported that an American soldier was killed in Baghdad area after the military vehicle he was travelling in hit a landmine.
Earlier, it was reported that five US soldiers and an Iraqi translator were wounded in two separate attacks in Baghdad, a US military spokesman said.
"Today, at 9:25 am (0525 GMT), on the airport road, an improvised explosive device was thrown on a convoy of the Third Armoured Division," Sergeant Marc Ingham said. "Two soldiers were wounded and one Humvee disabled."
Meanwhile, a top secret military team and other US forces have carried out a series of raids in the hunt for Saddam Hussein, the military said Monday.
Special Operations Task Force 20, which is roaming Iraq on the hunt for Saddam and other high-profile targets, captured four key figures last week, 4th Infantry Division spokeswoman Maj. Josslyn Aberle said at a news briefing, according to AP.
"It's just a matter of time. He can't stay in one place very long," Aberle said.
Two of Saddam's "very close associates" were captured Friday in Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, Aberle conveyed. Two others, described only as high-profile targets, were caught Saturday during a raid in Baiji, just north of Tikrit, she said, adding that the military is not ready to release their names.
Intelligence on Saddam's whereabouts is constantly evolving and the army is poised to strike, she said. US military officials estimate that Saddam moves every four hours. (Albawaba.com)
