A bomb containing dynamite and a timer was found under a bridge north of the Philippine capital on Saturday, a local radio station reported in Manila.

The device was spotted by a motorist under a highway bridge near San Simon town in Pampanga province, radio station DZBB reported.

Explosives experts are still trying to defuse the bomb, the report added.

Police spokesmen in Manila said they could not immediately confirm the report.

The discovery follows a series of bomb blasts in Manila on December 30 which killed 22 people and injured almost 100.

Police blame Muslim separatist guerrillas in the southern Philippines for the attacks and have warned that they may strike in areas outside the capital.

However Manila's political opposition says the bombs may have been planted by allies of Philippine President Joseph Estrada to divert attention from the continuing Senate corruption trial which may lead to Estrada being removed from power -- MANILA (AFP)
