The Iranian and Iraqi governments have informed the United Nations of a new border crossing point between the two countries, which will be used as a trade route for the delivery of humanitarian relief aid, under the world body's "oil-for-food" program, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported Tuesday.
According to IRNA, the Office of the Iraq Program, which runs the scheme permitting Baghdad to use a portion of its crude revenues to purchase relief supplies, announced on Monday plans to deploy independent UN inspection agents in the new Khosravi - Mondhariya crossing point in the late part of January or early February.
The agents will be responsible for confirming and authenticating the delivery of goods to Baghdad, in line with the program.
Furthermore, IRNA added that the newly designated crossing point, situated northeast of the capital Baghdad is the sixth one set up under the "oil-for-food" program. Other points are located on or near Iraq's border with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, Jordan and Syria. (Albawaba.com)
