British coastguards said on Wednesday that 19 passengers on board a ferry were taken to hospital after their vessel collided with a container ship in western Scotland.

The Poole Scene, which ferries passengers along the River Clyde, was carrying 44 people when it hit the Nordsee, a 2,500 ton container ship in thick fog.

Rescue helicopters and lifeboats were alerted, but both vessels managed to limp back to port at nearby Greenock, where the injured were taken ashore and led to waiting ambulances.

A spokeswoman for Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where the injured were taken, said most were only slightly wounded and have been discharged. One man is still in hospital being treated for a cut leg.

"It was fog and there was a collision," said a spokesman for the coastguard service. "It could not have happened very far offshore. It was all over and done with very quickly." -- LONDON (AFP)
