Sudan's main northern opposition party, the Umma, on Wednesday welcomed as a "positive step" the general amnesty for political dissidents which was declared by Sudanese president Omar Bashir.

The Umma's reaction was announced by the party's spokesman Ahmed Hassan.

Bashir decreed a general unconditional amnesty to all government opponents inside and outside Sudan, along with the release of all political prisoners and detainees, the official SUNA news agency announced earlier in Khartoum.

The pardon benefits every Sudanese, military or civilian, who has committed any illegal act or has illegally refrained from discharging a duty during the period between June 30th, 1989 and the date of this decree, SUNA said.
