A top Iranian defense official has reiterated that his country respects its commitment to international treaties on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including chemical weapons.

Deputy Defense Minister Rear Admiral Mohammad Shafiea Roudsari told the official Iranian news agency (IRNA) that the activities of Iran's defense industry were “merely directed to promote military capability in areas that lead to maximum deterrence.”

Shafeia further voiced his support for the idea that promoting the deterrence capability of a defense system must become a principle for countries around the world.

"Based on such a principle, Iran launches industrial and defense cooperation with friendly nations and those who have a complementing industrial capacity to design and produce required military parts and products," he said.

Shafiea said the aim of such cooperation was to secure “joint design, joint production and joint marketing.”

He said, meanwhile, that the present cooperation between Iran and Russia was based on such a principle, reiterating that both states enjoyed complementary capacities in industrial and defense enterprises.

He further termed the concern of Western countries about such cooperation as “unnecessary,” saying such a concern resulted from the strategic position of Iran and Russia - Albawaba.com
