Brazilian GSM operator Oi today consolidates its position at the forefront of mobile innovation in Latin America with the announcement of plans to rollout a new generation of high accuracy location based services in partnership with CPS.
Oi has enjoyed spectacular customer growth since its launch in 2002 and now serves over seven million customers across the country. The planning for Location Based Services using “Matrix” technology is in line with its mission to bring new and innovative services to market first.
The announcement follows extensive trials involving high accuracy location technology company CPS.
Oi selected CPS’s software-only Matrix technology to power the new service offerings because of its ease of deployment and integration with several existing application platforms. The success of the trials – including testing in dense urban, suburban and rural areas – highlighted the accuracy of Matrix performance across all environments and a range of applications.
Oi said that since matrix has consistent performance with high accuracy and quick response times, it will allow the continuous deployment of several high quality LBS services for both consumer and corporate markets, contributing with ARPU increase and Oi´s innovative image.
CPS CEO Chris Wade said: “Oi shows tremendous commitment to maintaining their lead in developing and launching new and innovative services to their rapidly expanding customer base.
“This latest announcement marks another significant step forward for our Matrix technology. Its powerful combination of low cost, high accuracy and rapid and easy deployment capabilities is making it the natural choice for GSM operators.”
Oi, a company owned by the Telemar Group - the largest private company in Brazil, is the owner of the first GSM operator in Brazil with more than 3400 base stations. It started operations in June, 2002 and now has more than 7 million subscribers. The strong expansion of the company reflects the efficient sales and distribution strategies, seasonal promotions, fidelity programs, and service bundles. This strategy is fortified by the synergy between Oi and Telemar, which together offer complete and integrated telecommunication solutions.
The company operates in 16 Brazilian states: Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Maranhão, Pará, Amazonas, Amapá, Roraima, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará e Piauí.
CPS (Cambridge Positioning Systems Limited) delivers cost competitive high accuracy mobile location technology to the billion-strong customer GSM and emerging 3G/WCDMA markets. CPS’ products are based on its software-only Matrix technology – which delivers sub-100m accuracy, sub-3 second location fixes and all environment coverage. The product portfolio extends to Matrix 3G and E-GPS – a powerful combination of Matrix and GPS technology.
With network deployments of Matrix underway, CPS is working with the world’s leading mobile technology companies – including Nokia, HP, LogicaCMG and Andrew - to enable a new generation of high accuracy location based services and devices for enterprise and consumer markets. Headquartered in Cambridge (UK), CPS is funded by venture capital and strategic corporate investors. CPS’s value is underpinned by 20 key worldwide technology patents – one of the largest and most comprehensive IPR portfolios of high accuracy location technology in the world.
