The Omani government has allowed an eight-week amnesty, effective from April 21st, for illegal expatriate workers to legalize their stay in the Sultanate or leave the country, failing which they will taken to task, the Gulf News reported Monday.
Sheikh Amor bin Shuwain Al Hosni, said in a statement that "it has been decided for the public good to offer an eight-week grace period, as of April 21st, to all expatriate workers who do not work with their sponsors, or who reside illegally in the Sultanate in order to conform to the requirements of the law or leave the country."
Hosni urged expatriates concerned to "seize the opportunity and benefit from the period of grace by legalizing their positions or leaving the Sultanate to avoid stringent legal measures."
He urged businessmen and citizens to cooperate with the ministry to ensure that every expatriate was working legitimately, to speed up Omanization, which is a drive to remove joblessness among the local populace, the daily said – Albawaba.com
