A mail train on Wednesday hurtled past two red lights and careered into a stationary coal train in southwest England, injuring one driver, British rail officials said.
The Royal Mail driver was rushed to hospital with a broken arm and cuts to his face and chest. He was said later to be in a comfortable position.
The accident happened shortly after 3:30 am (GMT) near Bristol city center and is the latest in a series of accidents to hit Britain's creaking rail network in the past month.
By daylight, the mail train's engine could be seen balanced precariously on the mangled wreckage of the coal wagons, wedged under a key road bridge.
Two other train crew at the scene were thought to have escaped uninjured.
Derek Holmes, a production manager for Railtrack, which operates Britain's railway network, said the Royal Mail train had gone through two red signals.
Four people died and dozens more were injured on October 17 when a high-speed passenger train derailed in Hatfield, north of London.
Another train was partially derailed in southwest London a few days later.
Since the weekend, floods and storm-blown debris on the line have worsened the already severe delays caused by a rushed program of safety repairs -- LONDON (AFP)
