Afghan opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood has died of wounds suffered in a suicide bomb attack last Sunday, an opposition diplomatic source told AFP Saturday on condition of anonymity.

The source at the Afghan embassy in Tajikistan -- which continues to recognise the ousted Afghan government of former president Burhanuddin Rabbani -- refused to say when Masood had died or give further details.

An aide to Masood in Moscow insisted earlier Saturday that the commander of the forces of the opposition Northern Alliance was clinging to life despite persistent reports that he had died after being severely wounded in the attack.

Military and political leaders of the Northern Alliance, including Rabbani, opposition foreign minister Doctor Abdullo and the military leader designated to replace Masood, former intelligence chief, General Fahim were meeting in the Pansheer Gorge in northeastern Afghanistan to discuss the situation, diplomatic sources in Dushanbe said -- DUSHANBE (AFP)
