ALBAWABA - A Pakistani court released an order to suspend the jail sentence of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, and his wife Bushra Bibi in an illegal selling of state gifts case.
Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were each handed a 14-year sentence in the case on January 31. The Islamabad High Court on Monday said that the suspension will remain in motion till a decision is made, which will most likely be after the Eid holiday.
Khan remains in jail after multiple other sentences were imposed on the ex-cricket star ahead of the national polls, which also disqualified him from holding any public office for 10 years.
A spokeswoman for his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said the Islamabad High Court overturned the former cricket star's anti-corruption court conviction for selling official gifts, with an appeal pending.
The trial court allowed "limited counsel access but also reached the decision in haste without allowing the defense to conclude arguments," spokesman Ahmed Janjua stated.
Khan received three sentences in the run-up to Pakistan's February general elections. Analysts said it was an attempt to exclude the former prime minister and his PTI party from the election.
