Police on Friday arrested a Guinean national who was trying to smuggle four kilogram’s of opium to the Gulf state of Abu Dhabi, airport officials in Peshawar said.

The trafficker, Calvo Pasilva, had concealed the opium in his briefcase, the officials in this northwestern city said.

He was arrested shortly before he could board a Gulf Air flight bound for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Police last month arrested 23 Nigerian and Ghanian nationals with hundreds of heroin-filled capsules in their stomachs.

The Africans were arrested soon after their arrival at Peshawar airport to board flights to Qatar and Dubai.

The capsules, recovered from their stomachs in a local hospital, yielded seven kilograms (15 pounds) of heroin, officials said.

Anti-drug authorities on Thursday seized 27 kilograms of heroin from a car near Peshawar.

Officials said after a chase the lone trafficker abandoned the vehicle, disguised as "press" car.

"A search of the car led to the recovery of 27 kilograms of fine quality white heroin powder," an official said, adding the occupant fled.

The car had come from the nearby tribal town of Bara, bordering Afghanistan, which is the world's biggest producer of opium -- PESHAWAR (AFP)
