The Palestine National Council (PNC) on Saturday called on the international community to provide immediate protection for the Palestinian people from Israeli "extermination."
The PNC, at a meeting in Amman chaired by Speaker Salim Zanoun, also strongly condemned the US Congress for adopting a resolution blaming the Palestinians for the violence that has rocked the occupied territories.
"The PNC denounces the biased American Congress and urges the international community, the (UN) Security Council, European Union countries, Russia and China to intervene immediately and provide international protection for our people which is daily facing extermination," a statement said.
It said the meeting was held to discuss the October 25 resolution adopted by the US House of Representatives "which violates basic human rights at a time when our people are facing Israeli barbarism."
The PNC also urged UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to set up a commission of inquiry into the violence that has killed more than 140 people, most of them Arabs, since October 28.
It also vowed to carry on the uprising against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and Jerusalem.
"Our noble Intifada will be pursued and we will offer more martyrs until we set up a Palestinian state before the end of the year," the PNC said in its statement.
Last Wednesday the US House of Representatives expressed "its solidarity with the state and people of Israel" by a 365-30 vote and condemned the Palestinian leadership "for encouraging the violence and doing so little for so long to stop it".
The administration of US President Bill Clinton has tried to distance itself from the resolution, which has gone to the Senate for consideration.
The Palestinian interior ministry on Thursday charged that the resolution, was "incompatible with the role of sponsor of the peace process which is being played by the United States."
"It is a certificate of absolution delivered (to Israel) by the legislature of the most powerful country in the world that holds the victim accountable for murder and torture and absolves the executioner," it added.
The Jordanian parliament and the Arab League have also harshly criticized the resolution – AMMAN (AFP)
