The Palestinian Abu Nidal group has threatened to mount attacks in Austria over the trial of a member of the group in Vienna, the Austrian interior ministry said Thursday.

In a statement, the ministry said it was taking measures after "reliable and checked sources" indicated that the group intended to put "Austrian interests" at risk.

A leading female member of the group, Halimeh Almughrabi, went on trial in April on terrorism charges. She was arrested in Vienna in January while trying to withdraw more than seven million dollars from a bank account.

The Abu Nidal group carried out deadly attacks in the Austrian capital in 1981, 1982 and 1985, and other attacks across Europe during the 1980s – VIENNA (AFP)
