Three Israelis were injured, one seriously, in an explosion in a car at a roadblock in downtown Jerusalem on Monday evening.

Jerusalem police chief Mickey Levy said that the seriously injured man was a police officer who had stopped the car for a security check.

The blast took place after the car arrived at the roadblock and police asked the Palestinian driver for his identification card. The Palestinian was killed in the blast.

Levy said that it was unclear if the blast had been caused by a suicide bomber or if the vehicle itself had been booby-trapped.

According to police estimates, the Palestinian was on his way to an area of West Jerusalem containing restaurants and pubs, in order to carry out an attack that would cause a large number of Israeli casualties.

The roadblock at which the blast occurred is one of a number erected in the city over the past few days, following fears of bombings during the Jewish Pesach holiday, Haaretz reported. (Albawaba.com)
