A 50-year-old Palestinian civilian was killed early Tuesday by Israeli tank shrapnel in the Shajaia neighborhood east of Gaza City after Israeli tanks backed by a helicopter chased Islamic Jihad activists, who had ambushed an army patrol with grenades, Palestinian witnesses and hospital sources said.
An army spokesman confirmed an exchange of fire between soldiers and a Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Israeli military sources said the army arrested 25 Palestinians, some of them wanted men, in the West Bank.
In related news, the sources said the Israeli army has boosted forces in Nablus, following clashes between troops and Palestinians, and violations of the army curfew, Israeli Army said.
Israeli forces remained on alert for possible attacks inside Israel. According to media reports, intelligence warnings have been received about planned attacks and the Shin Bet security service and police have beefed up their presence throughout the country, the report stated. (Albawaba.com)
