A Palestinian was killed Tuesday by shrapnel from a tank shell fired by the Israeli army during clashes in the West Bank town of Ramallah, a hospital source said.

Naim Daran, 50, was killed in his home in the northern sector of Ramallah, which took a direct hit from an Israeli tank shell, the source added.

The death brings to 421 the number of people killed since the September 28 start of the Intifada in the occupied territories and in Israel: 346 Palestinians, 61 Israelis, 13 Arab Israelis and a German.

Earlier in a separate incident, five Palestinians were wounded by rubber bullets and taken to hospital after throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.

The clashes broke out after exchanges of fire between armed Palestinians and Israeli soldiers at dawn, near the village of Beit Rima, near Ramallah.

In Ramallah itself, about 1,000 people attended a funeral for Hussam Imad al-Disi, 17, shot dead by Israeli soldiers during clashes Monday outside the nearby Qalandia Palestinian refugee camp.

“Revenge, revenge!” the mourners shouted. “The doors of the Aqsa are made of steel; they only open for the martyr,” cheered others, many carrying Palestinian flags.

In the Gaza Strip, a 13-year-old boy was in serious condition after being shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, hospital officials said.

Mohammed Helis was shot as he was walking home from school near the flashpoint Karni crossing point between the Gaza Strip and Israel, witnesses said, adding that there were no clashes at the time.

The Israeli army also reported that three Israelis were wounded Tuesday.

An Israeli woman was seriously injured in a drive-by shooting in the West Bank just north of Jerusalem, army and medical sources said.

Palestinians in a car opened fire on a vehicle near the Qalandia refugee camp between Ramallah and Jerusalem, the sources said, hitting the 30-year-old woman in the chest with two bullets.

Two men in the car were lightly injured, including the driver. All three were from Jerusalem.

About 15 Israelis, most of them Jewish settlers, have been killed in similar drive-by shootings since the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, broke out in late September -- RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP)
