A thousand Palestinians demonstrated in Bethlehem on Monday, parading a donkey painted the colors of the Israeli flag and bearing the names of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Clashes broke out shortly after the demonstration, in which 11 Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets fired by Israeli soldiers.

The donkey -- its hair painted blue and white with the names of Barak and Mubarak and an Israeli flag attached around its neck -- was left by the demonstrators near Israeli troops at Rachel's Tomb, a Jewish religious shrine.

The protesters also paraded a coffin draped with the Israeli and US flags and the inscription: "Here lie Arab leaders."

The demonstrators accused Arab leaders of failing to decide on strong action against Israel during their emergency summit Saturday and Sunday in Cairo.

Many Palestinians also accuse Mubarak of pressuring Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat during the US-brokered Sharm el-Sheikh summit with Barak in Egypt a week ago.

Barak on Sunday praised Mubarak, the Arab summit's host, for urging fellow Arab heads of state to take a "balanced approach" -- BETHLEHEM (AFP)
