A rocket fired from Gaza Strip fell Friday in an uninhabited area of the settlement bloc of Gush Etzion in the West Bank near Jerusalem, causing no injuries or major damage, said Luba Samri, a spokesman for the Israeli police. This is the first time in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that a Palestinian rocket falls near Jerusalem , located 65 km from the Gaza Strip.
"According to preliminary information, a rocket fell in the Gush Etzion bloc", to the southwest of Jerusalem, said Samri. "The police went to the scene," she added.
Shortly before, a spokesman for the Israeli army said the rocket fired from Gaza had hit an uninhabited area in the vicinity of Jerusalem, causing no injuries or major damage.
In Gaza, the Hamas armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, claimed "the firing of Qassam rockets towards occupied Jerusalem."
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman lives in the settlement of Nokdim in the Gush Etzion region.
Previously, the sirens had sounded in Jerusalem for the first time since the Israeli military operation against armed groups in Gaza started on Wednesday. "We must completely remove the threat from Gaza," commented Israel's Environment Minister Gilad Erdan. "The terrorists will not dictate our daily lifestyle," he added.
