The Palestinian Authority of Yasser Arafat late Saturday accused Israel of trampling on the latest truce and called on the sponsors of the peace process to halt "Israeli aggression" against the Palestinian people.

In a statement released here, the Palestinians said Israel had failed to implement the peace accord agreed late Thursday by Arafat and Israeli former prime minister Shimon Peres.

Instead of lifting the blockade against the Palestinian territories, the statement said, the Israelis "have made a more aggressive escalation" of the conflict.

Israel, it added, had failed to open the Gaza Strip crossing point at Erez to allow Palestinian workers to travel to their jobs in Israel and had refused to reopen the Yasser Arafat International Airport in the Gaza Strip.

The Peres-Arafat agreement is aimed at halting five weeks of bloodletting in the Palestinian territories, which has killed more than 170 people and left more than 4,000 injured, most of them Palestinians.

The statement reaffirmed the support of the Palestinian leadership for a "peaceful" Intifada, or uprising, against Israel -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
