UN human rights chief Mary Robinson's convoy came under fire while she was visiting the divided West Bank city of Hebron on Sunday, Palestinian police and witnesses said.
They said shots were fired at the convoy from an Israeli army post guarding a Jewish settlement in the center of the flashpoint city, and one car was hit by a bullet.
UN officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
"We don't know of any such incident, but we are checking," said Israeli army spokesman Yarden Vatikay.
Under a US-brokered January 1997 agreement, Israel withdrew its troops from four-fifths of Hebron, retaining control of 20 percent of the city where the settlers live.
