Palm Utilities to commence operation of new district cooling facilities in August
Palm District Cooling spearheads project to provide 105,000 TR to Palm Jumeirah Trunk and 104,000 TR to Discovery Gardens
Palm Utilities, a wholly owned subsidiary of Istithmar World PJSC, a major investment holding company incorporated in the Dubai World Group, has recently commissioned two new projects as the company continues to expand its operations and deliver its world-class utility solutions to prime development projects in the region. Palm Utilities will provide complete turnkey operations to the 2nd phase of Discovery Gardens and the Palm Jumeirah Trunk developments, with both facilities expected to be operational by the end of August 2008.
The Discovery Gardens project, being undertaken by Palm District Cooling (PDC), will supply 104,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR) through three District Cooling Plants, while the Palm Jumeirah Trunk project, being worked on by PDC and Palm Water, will deliver up to 105,000 TR through four District Cooling Plants. Palm Utilities further announced that by August two other projects currently undergoing construction will also commence operation: the first two phases of the 120,000 TR serving Atlantis on Palm Jumeirah Crescent, and the first phase of the 105,000 TR for Jumeirah Lake Towers.

To optimise the delivery of district cooling, PDC will utilise treated sewage effluent (TSE) in the cooling process wherever water resources are scarce and expensive. PW will supply the TSE, which will be polished using purposely designed polishing plants. The method reduces the energy required for the cooling process, while the by-products can be reused for irrigation, making Palm Water's comprehensive utility solutions highly cost-effective and environmentally sensible.
With the ongoing success being achieved by Palm Utilities and the increasing demand for its services, the company has revealed plans to explore others fields and expand its operations throughout the Gulf region. Palm Utilities also disclosed that future business prospects are being discussed with potential partners in the Middle East, India and Asia.
Palm Utilities, through PDC and PW, has been established to address the region's unique requirements in the distinctly critical areas of district cooling, and waste water treatment. Palm Utilities has implemented a comprehensive expansion program and intends to pursue new core business activities within other utilities, including sustainable energy and environmental waste management.
