Iranian President Mohammed Khatami was forced to cancel a visit to the provinces amid fears of a terrorist attack by the Iraq-based opposition, a conservative newspaper said Saturday.

Khatami's office announced on November 7 that a planned trip the following day to the northwestern town of Mianeh had been called off but gave no explanation.

But the weekly Siasat said the trip, to inaugurate a new metallurgy facility, was cancelled after reports that several commando groups of the armed opposition People's Muhajedeen had infiltrated the northwest.

It gave no further details. Opposition attacks have been on the increase in recent months – TEHRAN (AFP)
