A new garden in the French capital is to be dedicated to the memory of the late Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in a ceremony Sunday, almost exactly five years after his assassination in Tel Aviv.

Rabin's children Yuval and Dalia as well as Israeli ministers Shimon Peres and Michael Melchior will attend the unveiling of a memorial plaque in the Bercy park, which has been constructed over a derelict plot of land in the east of the city.

Rabin's widow Leah, who was also due at the ceremony, will not attend because of ill-health, according to a statement from the Paris city-hall.

Paris mayor Jean Tiberi will preside over the dedication, at the end of which an actor will read out Rabin's last speech, uttered shortly before he was shot on November 4, 1995 -- PARIS (AFP)
