The secretary of the PLO Executive Committee, Mahmoud Abbas, arrived in Damascus on Sunday for his first visit to Syria in 15 years.
Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen, came from Jordan by car, reported the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA.
The assistant general secretary of the Popular Front-General Command, Talal Naji, told reporters before Abu Mazen’s arrival that the latter's visit was private, denying that the visit was in preparation for a planned visit by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Arafat’s meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad has been postponed several times.
Abu Mazen is scheduled to meet with Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam and Foreign Minister Farouq Shara, KUNA said.
