Police: Chinese Crewman Kills Taiwanese Captain, Jumps into Sea

A mainland Chinese crewman on a Taiwanese tuna fishing boat murdered the captain on the high seas before jumping overboard and vanishing, Malaysian police said Monday.

The crewman attacked the Taiwanese captain with a sharp object because he was apparently unhappy with the way the mainland Chinese crew members were treated, said Mustapha Abdullah, police chief at Georgetown in the northern state of Penang.

The attacker also injured two Taiwanese crewmen before jumping into the sea early Saturday, Mustapha told AFP.

He said the ship's agent notified police, who sent a boat to bring the fishing vessel to Georgetown.

The two injured Taiwanese crewmen were in a local hospital. Four mainland Chinese crewmen and two Indonesians are in police custody to help with investigations, Mustapha said.

"This is a clear murder case," he said, adding that marine police have launched a search for the attacker who dived overboard.

It was not clear where the tuna boat was when the killing occurred but Mustapha said it was in Malaysian waters when marine police reached it -- KUALA LUMPUR (AFP)
