A police officer was shot dead in central Barcelona on Wednesday in an attack which local authorities blamed on the Basque separatist organization ETA.
"Everything leads us to believe it is an ETA attack," Barcelona Mayor Joan Clos said in a statement to the press.
The policeman "surprised the terrorists" who fled the scene after killing the victim, said the central government's delegate to Catalonia, Julia Garcia Valdecasas.
The officer, who was not immediately identified, was shot twice in the forehead and once in the chest when he approached two men pushing a car just before 7:00 am (0600 GMT) local time, police said -- BARCELONA (AFP)
