Four out of five Germans fear US retaliation for the bloody terror attacks could unleash further violence, and over half fear it could lead to a new world war, according to an opinion poll published Wednesday.

Eighty percent of those asked feared US retaliation could lead to new violence, and 57 percent feared that US or NATO strikes could result in a new world war, the Forsa institute poll found.

The poll commissioned by the weekly paper Die Woche found that two-thirds -- 66 percent -- of those asked would support German participation in US military action against whoever was responsible for the September 11 attacks.

However, only 27 percent thought that Germany should send combat troops for such an operation, with 70 percent in favour of it providing "indirect help" such as means of transport and health support -- HAMBURG, Germany (AFP)
