Pope John Paul II called on Israel and the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table Sunday, urging them to find a "just and durable peace."

"Mutual confidence, the repudiation of arms and the respect of international law are the only means by which the peace process can be given new life," the pope said in his Angelus, his opening prayer, at a sports Jubilee in the Olympic stadium.

"Once again, I invite all parties in the peace process not to give up on their efforts to re-establish the dialogue that was in place a few weeks ago," he told a crowd of 60,000 people.

"Pray that we can return to the negotiating table and, through dialogue, achieve a just and durable peace guaranteeing the inalienable rights of freedom and security to all," he said – ROME (AFP)
