A pro-Palestinian group in the UAE has raised a total of Dh2.35 million ($640,000) during the last two months to support the families of the victims of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, according to an official of the Dubai-based Intifada Support Committee.

The group launched a fundraising campaign in July to support the Palestinians in their struggle against Israeli occupation, Mahmoud Abu Shawish, general secretary of the Committee said, cited by the official WAM news agency.

The funds were to be distributed among displaced families to rebuild their destroyed houses, WAM quoted the official as telling the Abu Dhabi-based Gulf News.

“We have generated Dh2,350,000 in two months, thanks to generous donations from various citizens of the UAE.”

He said that the “Israeli aggression, since the launch of the Intifada in September last year, has cost the Palestinians over 700 lives.”

Over 25,000 people have been reported injured, out of whom over 5,000 people had suffered permanent disabilities "as a result of the atrocities committed by the Israeli security forces against civilians," he added.

“Over 500,000 people have become jobless in Palestine and 70 per cent of the population lives below an income level of $1 per day. The Palestinian economy has lost over $6 billion since the beginning of the uprising.”

Palestinians on Friday marked the first anniversary of the Intifada, or uprising.
