Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday said he was confident that relations between Moscow and Washington would not worsen under the new Republican administration of President-elect George W. Bush.

"My analysis of modern history shows that when Republicans were heading the US administration, even US-Soviet relations were not harmed," he said in an interview broadcast on state broadcaster RTR television.

"We have always been able to find a common language with the Republicans. The United States and Russia are no longer rivals and enemies as during Soviet times," added Putin -- MOSCOW (AFP)
