Qatar said Wednesday it favored holding an urgent Arab summit as soon as possible on the "savage attacks" Israel has launched on Palestinians, the official QNA news agency reported.

Qatar's cabinet stressed the "need to hold this summit as soon as possible, especially in light of continuing Israeli provocation."

It condemned "the savage attacks committed by the Israeli forces occupying Jerusalem and in all Palestinian territories against unarmed citizens."

Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have all expressed themselves favorable to the holding of a summit, proposed by Egypt and Syria, along with Jordan and the Palestinians.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad issued a joint appeal in Cairo on October 2 for a summit of Arab leaders to deal with bloody clashes in the Palestinian territories.

Mubarak said Egypt was ready "to host a summit immediately" but added it would probably take three months to organize an emergency Arab summit.

"The first week in January is the closest and most likely date to hold the Arab summit," Mubarak said.
