Qatar has so far won the battle against efforts to cancel a World Trade Organization meeting scheduled to be held in Doha on November 9.

Several members of the WTO had urged that the meeting either be cancelled or relocated to prevent the prospect of a terrorist attack in retlaiation for US-led airstrikes on Afghanistan, the Middle East Newsline (MENL) reported.

But Qatar and the United States opposed such a change. Both countries said that initial inspections of Doha showed that the Qatari capital was safe for such a meeting.

WTO director of administrative services Jacques Emile Chabert, who is visiting Doha, has ruled out relocating the conference, the news source said.

"Technically speaking, it is impossible to organize a conference within three weeks," Chabert said.

Qatar had warned that any cancellation of the WTO meeting would send a negative message to the Islamic world.

Earlier this month, Doha hosted the Organization of the Islamic Conference, which groups 57 top Muslim nations and entities around the world – Albawaba.com
